You are allowed to make trades that would give you an illegal roster. In season it's easy, you can't submit a line-up if your roster is illegal.
In the off season it's a bit more hazy. What I typically do is give owners a reasonable time to make their roster legal. It really is an advantage to wait a couple days and if an injury occurs that gives added value to someone you were likely to cut your decision is much easier.
It should really be a set time though, say 24 hours from the trade approval or some similar time.
Currently my roster is illegal and I'd like to get value rather than cut someone. However that would look bad. So I am giving myself less time than I just gave someone else to make a move. They had just under a day, I'll try for 10-12 hours.
Then from now on the rule needs to be 24 hours from the trade's approval to get legal in the off season.
