Issue: Doesn't allow for players to make reasonable rate based on their performance.
Other owners are reluctant to bid on franchise players because a bid allows the franchise player owner to lock them up long term for a song.
Idea: Create a three tier system of franchise tags.
Tier 1: You assign them the current 50% bump for one year and other owners can bid on them. If the bid isn't matched then a smaller draft pick compensation is given. If player changes team it can be for a longer term deal, if they stay with current team it is still 1 year. Tier 1 franchise can only be used one time on same player.
Tier 2: You assign a 100% salary bump for 1 year, same bidding, with a better draft pick compensation on the line. If player changes team it can be for a longer term deal. If they stay with same team still a 1 year deal. Tier 2 can be assigned 2 consecutive years to same player.
Tier 3: You assign the player the average salary of the 3 players above and below the franchised player by position in terms of points. For this fair market raise you get to assign a long term deal AND no other teams can claim them.
Possibly create an offensive and defensive franchise tag.

I like this idea, only I think I'd keep as just options or tiers 2 and 3 just for simplicity sake, but keeping 3 tiers is fine too. I think I might get confused as to which Franchise tag meant what. I really llike the idea in tier three that we can sign our franchised player to a long term deal instead of just having to repeatedly franchise them if we want to keep them. Definitely think a offensive and defensive franchise tag is appropriate.

I'm not sure what you mean by a song? When I franchised Miles Austin, his salary went up from fifteen dollars to over a hundred dollars because I had to match all the highest bidders. After I matched the highest bid, then I was permitted to assign a new contract for whatever number of years I chose.
I don't think teams should be allowed to assign a franchised player a contract longer than one year. Here's my proposal.
Vested Veteran Contract Expires If you want to assign a franchise tag, then you should be charged a flat rate, say like a 25% or 50% increase. The first time you use a tag on a player, it should only be good for one season.
If you want to use a franchise tag on the same player the following year for a second time, then the rate should go up to like 50% or 75% depending on what rate was used for the first franchise tag year.
The maximum amount of time a team can apply a franchise tag to the same player should be 2 times.
Other teams can make offers for the franchised players and it will be up to the team whether to accept their offer. If they do accept the offer, then the winning team can assign whatever contract they choose to and the player is no longer considered franchised.

I think that teams should be able to sign their franchised players to a long term contract under whatever system we use. It could be at a substanial cost, but if you like a player and you want to keep him then I think you should be able to somehow after you franchise him.

I completely disagree, the franchise tag is a tool to use when owners didn't have the foresight to sign their players to longer term deals.
It's a last ditch effort to keep a player or at the very least not lose them for nothing.
There are several ways to keep and sign long term deals. I look through the league and I see all these teams skimping on term years. Every team has at least 15 years extra contract years. Stop signing guys to 1 and 2 year deals.
Once they are offered a fair market deal then sure you can sign them long term. But automatically? No way.

and I know you aren't saying "automatically" but it absolutely should be an ordeal. NFL players hate to be franchised and so should ours.

"NFL players hate to be franchised and so should ours." Yeah, that's like saying I didn't like GI Joe because it wasn't realistic.
This is fantasy football, just because it follows real football doesn't mean it should BE just like real football. I'm not sure about any of the ideas, but "Players" could care less whether Avengers, Deathstar, or Nerf Herders franchise them and for how long.
