Currently first bid sent for like dollar amounts. Term has no factor.
For exact dollar amount bids only term should factor as the deciding tie breaker and then first bid sent.
$10/4 should beat $10/2 right?
$10/4 should NOT beat $11/2 or $11/1 however
This would also encourage teams bidding longer contract terms which has many fun ramifications.

I like the idea of term deciding.

Agreed and I think this is the best approach.
I'd even consider discussing additional value to the those giving longer contracts. Maybe additional years are worth 5%. Therefore, a bid for $100 x 2 years would be worth 105. This would be the same as a bid for $100 x 1 year. A $100 x 3 year contract would be worth $110 x 1 year. I'm not saying this idea is better, but it may be more in line with what happens in the NFL -- players generally want longer contracts and would take a discount over a long term rather than be tagged at a large sum (franchise tag) for just one year.

I agree with the philosophy but would rather not have to do math for every bid I receive.

I also agree with the term being the deciding factor. Good idea.
